Abstract

There are many types of controls or reference conditions for silvicultural experiments. The most basic are pretreatment records of composition and structure, but such data provide little information about response to treatment compared to natural developmental and disturbance patterns. Ideally, experiments should have untreated stand replicates in which development can be tracked over time. Unfortunately, experimental controls in field studies are seldom ideal. This is the case on the Penobscot Experimental Forest in Maine, where a 50-year old replicated silvicultural experiment has an unreplicated, atypical control. An even greater challenge is the identification of stands that represent desired endpoints or natural states, especially if based on rare conditions such as old growth. The Big Reed Forest Reserve in Maine represents the largest area of middle to low elevation old growth in the state and may serve as a benchmark for management.
