Abstract

We explored the feasibility of using a subirrigation system for the propagation of hardwood stem cuttings. Subirrigation systems are relatively inexpensive and simple to construct and maintain. They also offer several advantages for propagating difficult-to-root species by decreasing water usage and nutrient leaching compared to traditional mist propagation systems. Cuttings from six stock types were each randomly assigned to one combination of three cover types, three propagation media, and five auxin treatments. Cuttings under white polyethylene sheeting in coarse perlite had the highest survival percentage and least incidence of basal rot among the subirrigation assemblies. Of the auxin treatments tested, a 3,000-ppm IBA quick dip appears to be a promising auxin treatment for softwood and semi-hardwood cuttings of difficult-to-root hardwoods within a subirrigation system.
