NIACS artworkAdaptive Silviculture for Climate Change

The Adaptive Silviculture for Climate Change (ASCC) project is a national, replicated, operational-scale experiment testing the effectiveness of climate adaptation strategies in silvicultural planning and on-the-ground actions. Silvicultural treatments at each study site are developed using the Adaptation Workbook process from Forest Adaptation Resources: Climate Change Tools and Approaches for Land Managers and contain treatments that approximate three general climate adaptation options: resistance, resilience, and transition.

Carbon Trends and Management

The Carbon Trends and Management theme encompasses several NIACS efforts to synthesize large-scale carbon datasets, produce assessments of forest carbon, find new applications for existing data resources, and inform the management of forest carbon. This work complements wider collaborative efforts led by NIACS team members to evaluate topics including forest biomass production, soil carbon sequestration, and land-use change, at multiple spatial and temporal scales. Climate Change Resource Center

The Climate Change Resource Center (CCRC) provides natural resource managers with access to science-based information and tools concerning ecosystem management and climate change. Its online portal offers original syntheses of land management topics written by scientists and resource specialists, in-depth video presentations that cover a wide range of climate change adaptation and mitigation topics, and access to a variety of tools and recommended literature.

Climate Change Response Framework

The Climate Change Response Framework (CCRF) is a collaborative, cross-boundary approach designed to help land managers and owners understand climate vulnerabilities and impacts, and to prepare individuals to act using the best available scientific information. Six different CCRF projects advance climate change adaptation through four interrelated components: Partnerships, Vulnerability Assessments, Adaptation Resources, and Adaptation Demonstrations.

Landscape Change Research Group

The Landscape Change Research Group (LCRG) specializes in creating ecological assessments using large amounts of biological, climatic, and terrain data with computer models and geographic information systems (GIS). This includes the Climate Change Atlas, which documents the current and possible future distribution of 134 tree species and 147 bird species in the Eastern United States and gives detailed information on environmental characteristics defining these distributions.

Radiocarbon Collaborative

The Radiocarbon Collaborative is dedicated to advancing climate and carbon cycle science by making radiocarbon analysis accessible, decipherable, and collaborative. It is jointly supported by the US Forest Service Northern Research Station, the W.M. Keck Carbon Cycle Accelerator Mass Spectrometer Facility at University of California, Irvine, and Michigan Technological University (MTU). The Radiocarbon Collaborative makes radiocarbon analysis accessible to earth system scientists, and assist in data interpretation and manuscript preparation.

USDA Northern Forests Climate Hub

The USDA Northern Forests Climate Hub helps natural resource managers, woodland owners, and others interested in forested ecosystems to integrate climate change information into planning, decision making, and management activities. The Hub provides practical, science-based climate information and climate adaptation training by providing forest sector-specific information and outreach to the Midwest and Northeast Regional Climate Hubs. Additionally, it collaborates across the country with national partners and regional Hubs to produce specialized adaptation resources and training events.
