Current Research

As a Climate Change Outreach Specialist for the Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science, I lead activities to build and strengthen partnerships, synthesize research into non-technical language for a variety of audiences, develop tools for forest managers, and promote the use of tools in adaptive forest management. My primary project is the Climate Change Response Framework, which is a collaborative, cross-boundary effort to engage scientists, natural resource managers, and land owners to integrate climate change considerations into on-the-ground planning and activities. We started this project as a pilot in northern Wisconsin, and it now covers more than 240 million acres of forest across the Midwest and Northeast.

I coordinate Climate Change Response Framework projects in two regions. The Central Appalachians region covers 29 million acres within Ohio, West Virginia, and Maryland. The Mid-Atlantic region covers 60 million acres within Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania. In both regions, we first create a forest vulnerability assessment that synthesizes scientific models and published research to predict forest response to climate change under several future climate scenarios. When the vulnerability assessment is complete, we then use Forest Adaptation Resources to identify and implement adaptation actions to help achieve management objectives. These resources are adaptive, work at multiple scales, and incorporate new information into planning processes.
