Emerald Ash Borer

TreEAB Curriculum

Purpose

[photo:] Students looking for signs of emerald ash borer infestation in the fieldEvery Ohio youth should have the opportunity to experience Ohio’s rich natural resources and develop an appreciation for the environment in which they live. Our interdisciplinary team wants to make that opportunity a reality. To do this, TreEAB is creating curriculum using current research as ‘teachable moments’ for application in the classroom. This curriculum will provide professional resources guided by Ohio state standards that are teacher friendly and easy to use in the classroom.

The current curriculum component contains a month long unit for Ohio students in grades 6-8. Within the unit, four one-week mini-units will include: ‘Why Trees Matter’, ‘Threats to Forests’, ‘Emerald Ash Borer’ and ‘Restoration’. Each mini-unit includes a unit overview with daily lesson plans and correlating activities for teachers. The week one and week three curriculum units were created in collaboration with Stefanie Fluke, and the week two and week four curriculum units are currently under development. The lesson plans are aligned to Ohio state learning standards, making it easy and practical for teachers. If time permits, teachers can decide to use all the mini-units, but will also have the option of choosing any combination with their students. Educational materials from the Ohio Department of Agriculture, US Forest Service Research and Project Learning Tree have been incorporated into the curriculum. Pre- and post-surveys will be given to teachers and students to gauge academic growth and provide feedback.

Materials and supplies for this curriculum are available on loan for free through Ohio State University Extension.  Please contact:
