Biology and Ecology

Understanding the biology and ecology of hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) is essential to developing effective management strategies. We have a good understanding of the basic life history of the insect, but much is still unknown about its interactions with the abiotic and biotic environment. Some examples of our objectives in this area include improving our knowledge of genetic diversity of the adelgid in its native and introduced ranges, developing a better understanding of the environmental factors that impact survival of the adelgid across the landscape, and learning more about the relation of feeding behavior to host suitability.
