The U.S. Forest Service Baltimore Field Station strives to make urban areas more desirable places to live, and to mitigate urban impacts upon the Chesapeake Bay. 
The Baltimore Field Station is a flagship federal research investment in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed for understanding relationships between urban and urbanizing areas and the Chesapeake Bay.  Field Station researchers provide policymakers, government agencies, NGOs, local communities, and businesses with technical capabilities and application tools, scientific expertise, and unique information to facilitate urban natural resource stewardship; monitor and evaluate investments in green infrastructure; and promote environmental education and careers.

 

Located on the campus of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, the Baltimore Field Station has close ties to the University’s Center for Urban Environmental Research and Education. Additionally, the Field Station plays a significant role in the Baltimore Ecosystem Study (BES), which is a long-term ecological research (LTER) project of the National Science Foundation. The Field Station is the local lead federal agency for the Baltimore Urban Waters project and participates in the Chesapeake Bay Program’s Forestry Workgroup, which is coordinated by the USFS Northeastern Area State & Private Forestry. Finally, the Baltimore Field Station is part of a network of U.S. Forest Service urban field stations, including New York CityPhiladelphiaChicago, and San Juan.

HIGHLIGHTED PROJECTS

Urban Forest Inventories: Urban FIA - The Urban FIA program extends the mission of the US Forest Service Forest Inventory & Analysis program to the nation’s urban areas. Urban FIA will improve the understanding and management of the nation’s urban natural resources by maintaining a comprehensive inventory of the status and trends of our diverse urban forest ecosystems, their use and health. The Urban FIA program began in 2014 in Baltimore, Maryland, and Austin, Texas.


 

Urban Tree Canopy Assessment - Urban Tree Canopy Suite of Tools. The aim of the urban tree canopy (UTC) assessment is to help decision makers understand their urban forest resources, particularly the amount of tree canopy that currently exists and the amount that could exist.  The UTC assessment protocols have been applied to dozens of counties, cities, and towns. UTC assessments provide urban resource managers with vital information to begin urban forestry goal setting and planning processes.


 

STEW-MAP - The Stewardship Mapping and Assessment Project (STEW-MAP) is helping us understand how individual citizens, non-profit organizations, businesses, and governments work together to care for specific places and the environment in general. STEW-MAP uses a broad definition of ‘environmental stewardship’ that includes caring for the land, water, & people.


 

Baltimore Ecosystem Study - Forest Service researchers are co-leaders of the Baltimore Ecosystem Study (BES), part of the National Science Foundation's Long-Term Ecological Research Network. The ecological knowledge created by BES helps us understand how Baltimore’s ecosystems change over time, supports educational and community-based activities, and interactions with the Baltimore community.

Introduction to Urban Tree Canopy Assessments - This is a brief video that explains the purpose, use, and applications of the Urban Tree Canopy (UTC) Assessment suite of tools. UTC is an extremely popular toolset with our stakeholders and partners.


Baltimore Wood Project (Part 1) - Mini-documentary about a partnership that results in the salvage and re-use of urban wood from deconstructed rowhomes in Baltimore, focusing on the ways that this project/partnership diverts waste, creates jobs and economic value, and improves lives. This is set into the larger context of how the FS works in urban areas to improve lives.
