MIWILD

Scott A. Thomasma, Linda Ebel Thomasma, Mark J. Twery,

Forest managers have long desired easily accessible information about wildlife species and their habitat requirements. Two tools that address this issue in Michigan and the Lake States are MIWILD and MIWILDhab2. MIWILD is software that uses a database of expert knowledge to analyze extent of wildlife habitat. Originally designed for use in planning activities on state land in Michigan, MIWILD was developed as a set of information and assessment tools for individuals interested in the wildlife of Michigan and their associated habitats. MIWILD allows a user to associate any of the terrestrial vertebrate species in Michigan with habitats available in Michigan. MIWILDhab2 provides assessments of changes in suitable habitat area for wildlife species of interest as a result of acreage changes due to user-specified management alternatives.

The relationship of MIWILD to NED:

image - logo for NED softwareProviding adequate amounts of appropriate habitat for species of interest is one of the many goals of forest owners and managers. Quality and quantity of habitat must be assessed, and its availability must be balanced with other identified needs from forests. Managers need tools to assess habitat trends and evaluate tradeoffs associated with existing habitat conditions and habitat management alternatives. The USDA Forest Service has spearheaded the creation of computer-based tools to help managers accomplish these tasks through the NED development effort. The NED software comprises a set of tools that enable a user to identify and inventory specific properties and management goals for those properties, then have the computer evaluate how well present or future conditions may meet those identified goals. (Twery et al. 2005)  MIWILD and MIWILDhab2 are independent programs from which the knowledge they contain will be added to the resources of forthcoming NED programs. MIWILD and MIWILDhab2 are successors to NEWILD, a similar package published in 1998 (Thomasma et al. 1998) based on the compilations of species-habitat relationships by DeGraaf and Rudis (1986) and DeGraaf et al. (1992) for New England.

User Manuals

User Manuals are installed with the software.  You may download PDF user manuals seperately below if you prefer.  Both manuals refer to Appendix A (IFMAP cover types) and Appendix B (NED forest types), which are combined into the Appendices pdf.

Installation Requirements for MIWILD

MIWILD will only install on Windows 2000, service pack 3 or later operating systems, as well as any version of Windows XP.  The installation and setup of MIWILD requires the Microsoft Windows Installer engine, version 3.0 or newer.  You may already have Windows Installer 3.0 if you have Windows XP service pack 2 or newer.  If you aren't sure which version of the windows installer is present on your computer, you may download a small utility program that will verify your current Windows Installer version for you.
