Current Research

I look at ways to apply cutting-edge geospatial technology to help scientists, public officials, and resource managers make better, more effective, and efficient decisions. I helped developed the Forest Service's Urban Tree Canopy (UTC) Assessment Protocols, which incorporate massive amounts of high-resolution imagery and lidar to provide communities with unprecedented insight into their urban forest. When existing, available imagery is out-of-date or lacks the appropriate characteristics I use drones to construct detailed maps and have employed this technology to assist with disaster response, inventory woody debris in streams, and map insect outbreaks.
