Shared Landscapes Initiative
A two-day Shared Landscapes Initiative Workshop was held February 2010 as part of the Climate Change Response Framework Project in northern Wisconsin. The workshop recognized that climate change affects the entire landscape and a successful response will be inherently cooperative across ownerships and with the public. There were over 70 participants at the workshop, including representatives from federal, state, and county government agencies, non-governmental organizations, educational institutions, tribal representatives, and industry groups.
The first morning of the workshop included presentations given by experts from the USDA Forest Service, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and NIACS about climate change, ecosystem responses, management strategies, and uncertainties. The workshop agenda and presentations are available below:

- “Climate Change Projections for Wisconsin”(pdf)

- “Forest Response to Climate Change” (pdf)

This workshop launched the Shared Landscapes Initiative, which will increase awareness and practical discussion of the potential ecological and land management pressures associated with climate change. A Shared Landscapes Working Group was established to provide a long-term forum to share landscape-scale adaptation to climate change, with an emphasis on open communication and cooperation. The Great Lakes Forest Alliance is facilitating the Working Group,S which represents 30 federal, state, other public, tribal, and private organizations. The Working Group will maintain communication within the Initiative and facilitate the creation of cooperative projects and products to address several cross-ownership issues.
